A Reckless Tuesday

Lately I’ve been reminded of a fact that is central to the Christian faith, but is an idea many of us don’t take advantage of. My name is at he top of the list! Don’t think that I’m good at this idea, but it is something I’ve been thinking about lately and it keeps coming across my desk, so to speak. Are you ready to hear about this idea that just might revolutionize your life and will make you a batter disciple? Here goes…

God will sustain you!

While we’re here in El Salvador two tourist police follow us around. I don’t know if we pay them to or if its just a nice gesture, but it makes our group feel safer. It’s not that we, or at least I, have ever felt threatened. Jorge is very careful in the places he chooses to take us.We still take several precautions to keep ourselves safe though, but at the end of the day none of those precautions are actually what make us safe.

It’s the Father’s hand that makes us safe! It’s thru His grace and power that we continue to work in His Name! The moment our time to move on past this life has come no security measures will keep you alive. In light of these things live and love recklessly in order to bring Him glory. We’re not talking about sky diving or gator wrestling. We’re talking about a reckless disregard for your safety if it brings Him glory. Don’t misunderstand me. I’m not saying step out into traffic or pick fights with bikers. I’m talking about me not shying away from something that would make the Father famous just because it might be dangerous for me. I’m talking about being ridiculously holy. Don’t be scared to go too far in your holiness. I’m talking about being okay with no one ever knowing about the things I did in the Kingdom. I’m talking about being okay when I’m taken advantage of (Matt. 5.38-42). I’m talking about giving up sins you’ve held into for so long that they’ve become almost second nature. I’m talking about becoming so holy the people in your church look at you like you’re weird.

“But I don’t think God wants that from me.” The Bible tells you what God wants from you! You don’t have to wonder! He’s made it clear! You should be going to great extremes to maintain your holiness (Matt. 5.48)

Remember the oath you took at your baptism? You may not remember because you were too young or didn’t understand completely, but what you signed up for was dying. Go check out Matthew 16.24 and the following verses. Dead men aren’t afraid to die! They’ve already been there! This fear we feel is an agent of Satan sent to plague us. Live and love recklessly. Start getting ridiculous about how closely you follow Jesus. He will show up!

Have you ever wondered why we don’t see God showing up in a powerful way in 2013? (I’m not talking about miracles so don’t use that as an escape.) I’m talking about things we pray for happening, things we only expected in the best possible outcome. Why don’t those things happen today like they did in the 1st century? Could it be that our 1st century counterparts trusted God explicitly whereas we’ve got a backup plan just in case He doesn’t work out events the way we want them to go? I love Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego’s remark in Daniel when Nebuchannezer gave them the ultimatum: bow down to his image or get thrown into the furnace.

“Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. 17 If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. 18 But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”

Even if God doesn’t step in and save the day I will say, “amen”. Live recklessly to make the Father famous. Believe that He will protect you, but live a radically transformed life even if He doesn’t. Stop reading and start crucifying!
